We all know the convenience of a quick cup of coffee from a Keurig, whether you’re brewing at home or back at the office. With the wide variety of flavours available, it’s easy to see why it’s become such a staple for many coffee drinkers who want an easier, one-cup solution. But what about when it comes to cleaning the machine? Here’s what you need to know! 

As a coffee drinker, you understand the need for good quality. That’s why it’s so important to make sure your Keurig is always ready to brew that perfect cuppa. To ensure your machine is up to the task each and every time, you’ll want to descale your Keurig every three to six months, depending on how frequently you use it. This will help the longevity of the heating element and any parts of the machine that encounter water. Here’s how to clean it in three simple steps.

• You’ll need a sizable mug, don’t use a paper cup for this process, and a bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution. Fully empty the water reservoir and replace it with a full bottle of descaling solution.

• Turn on the Keurig, place your large mug under the spout and lift and lower the lid to encourage the brewing process forward and without inserting a K-cup, reusable or otherwise, click BREW for 10oz. To use the descaling solution to its fullest potential, keep brewing in 10oz increments by repeating this step until the Keurig signals it needs more water. Then let it sit on for 30 minutes, or one comedy sitcom episode on Netflix!

• Once 30 minutes is up, thoroughly rinse out any leftover descaling solution and fill the reservoir with fresh water without exceeding the MAX indication line. Replace the mug once emptied under the spout and BREW the largest cup size by lifting and closing the lid without a K-cup. Discard the contents of the mug and then brew your favourite flavour of coffee or tea as usual!

Ensuring your Keurig is clean and ready to brew is the best way to guarantee that perfect cup of tea, hot chocolate or coffee. The mineral build-up created by exposure to water won’t harm us in any way, but it can definitely wear down your Keurig machine!
